Qatar Handball Association Complex

Grupo MCI presents you one of the last projects of the year carried out in Doha (Qatar). The project consist on the lighting facade and outdoors of the newly build Qatar Handball Association Complex (Lekhwiya, Doha); one of three stadiums built for the twenty-fourth edition of the World Men’s Handball Championship, which will take place from 15th of January to the 1st of February 2015.


The complex, with a total built-up area of approx. 40,000 square meters, will include an arena of 30,000 square meters with a planned capacity of 5,500 seats. The complex also includes; 2 training halls, 60-bedroom players’ accommodation, restaurant and lounges, QHA administration and media offices, presidential and exclusive lounges, medical centre, gymnasium, swimming pool and grandstands.


As requested by the client, our project department was commissioned to make accurate lighting calculations to try to reduce the number of luminaires in the project, without alter the uniformity and quality of the lighting effect.


The luminaires selected for the project were; Square Grazer® 66×2, SmartLedFlex®, LedFloodStrip® and Linear Flex Ultra Plus.


For general lighting 80 Square Grazer® RGBW 66×2, with a 45º beam angle, were used to highlight the facade providing an uniform and efficient wall washing effect. Note that the Square Grazer®’s were placed at 5 meters height, in different columns, and each column have 4 projectors installed.


Square Grazer®´s unique design, with PSU integrated, is a perfect solution for architectural illumination that perfectly fits as part of the architecture. The swivel head projector comes with a wide range of colors (from cold white to RGBW) and optics (9º, 28º, 45 and 10×50) which helps to create many lighting atmospheres with great precision.


For the lighting control of the fixtures DMX512-A was used. The finality of this protocol is to create different lighting scenes, which can be activated in autonomic way by presence sensors, crepuscule ones, or by time sensors, through programmed events or by users with control keyboard or remote control, Smartphone’s, digital screens or wall-pushers simply.


Due to the dimensions of the project the distribution of the DMX signal was performed through a radial fiber optic network. The luminaire control rack was performed in our facilities, and the programming of the lights effects were done by remote control, following the specifications and requirements from our customer.


To highlight the perimeters of the complex, SmartLedFlex® was used. This flexible linear fixture is very suitable for decorative architectural projects that provides a high performance homogeneous light to highlight the perimeters and outlines of buildings.


As a finishing touch and to light up the different hexagons surrounding the facade of the stadium, Linear Flex Ultra Plus 72W was used. Linear Flex® is a great solution for applications with curving surfaces or limited space. Its small size enables it to be seamlessly integrated into architectural spaces. Those fixtures are used to provide high performance indirect lighting.


Finally, for the lighting of the outdoor stairs of the complex,LedFloodStrip® was used. Warm white light color for signaling the stairs, and RGB for the handrails. This product is mainly characterized by its small size, low power consumption and easy installation.
