The Arcadia · Hotel Boutique

The Arcadia, Coimbatore (India) is a boutique hotel with new-age facilities to suit a business traveller or leisure guest, which has recently won an IES Illumination Award 2014. The IES Illumination Awards provides a unique opportunity for public recognition of professionalism, ingenuity, and originality in lighting design based upon the individual merit of each entry judged against specific criteria.

The hotel has a special architecture that is sure to get every guest impressed. The interiors are tastefully furnished and flaunt a contemporary appeal that is a class apart. Situated in a quiet area within a short distance from the airport, recreation and business centres, this hotel is an apt choice amongst corporate travellers.

Lighting played an important role, as it had to highlight the key boutique elements while being warm and welcoming. The concept was to use accent lighting to highlight the boutique elements, and soft lighting to support different activities.

To illuminate the façade, designed by Shanavaz & Associates, the Lighting Designer Dr. Amardeep M. Dugar from Lighting Research & Design used Linear Flex®. On the left side a glass cuboids is backlight in purple, the hotel’s corporation colour, and on the right side, a compositions of three-dimension cuboids in different sizes has been back lit with monochromatic colour to highlight the cuboids, which make the façade a considerable icon of the hotel’s exterior design.

Linear Flex® warm white has been also used as cove lighting in the ceiling to illuminate the restaurant and the reception in order to provide a cosy and relax ambient to the guests.

The new ranges of Linear Flex® (Basic, Plus, Ultra Plus) are the flexible linear LED solutions for cove lighting applications with curving linear surfaces or limited space. Those fixtures are used to provide high performance indirect lighting. The product is very flexible and can be installed easily onto any surface. Its small size enables it to be seamlessly integrated into architectural spaces.

Coimbatore is currently facing a major power crisis with 18-hour power-cuts, so it was imperative to use lighting technologies that are both energy-saving and can easily operate on back-up power.
